- 1480: The policies of the Spanish Inquisition began in the Iberian peninsula, under royal authority, following Catholic canon law. Its institutions would remain in force until 1834.
- 1481: The first auto de fe took place in Seville.
- 1482: Permanent Spanish Inquisition tribunals began to be established.
- 1482: The Portuguese navigator, Diogo Cão, became the first European to sail up the Congo River.
- 1482: Ivan III renounced the Mongol Khanate's rule over Russia. (In other words, Russia seceded from the Mongol Khanate.)
- 1483: William Caxton, the first printer of books in English, printed his translation of Aesop's Fables.
- 1483: The Sistine Chapel opened in August.
- 1484: The first sugar mill became operational in the Gran Canaria.
- 1485: The city of Vienna fell to Matthias of Hungary while he was conquering Austria. Matthias made Vienna his capital.
- 1485: Forty years of civil war in England were brought to an end when the House of Tudor defeated the House of York in the Wars of the Roses. Stable rule in England would be gradually restored.
- 1487: Italian architects began to build the Kremlin in Moscow.
- 1488: The present Royal Netherlands Navy was formed by decree of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian of Austria.
- 1489: Jeannetto de Tassis was appointed Chief Master of Postal Services in Innsbruck. His descendants would come to run much of the postal system in Europe.
