3KND is a community radio station which represents the Indigenous communities within Greater Melbourne, Victoria, Australia1. 3KND broadcasts in Melbourne at 1503 on the AM radio band2 and also streams on the internet3. As at late 2006, 3KND has the beginnings of an mp3 library4. The South Eastern Indigenous Media Association is the station operator5. The station provides training for indigenous broadcasters6.

History
The 1503 frequency had been previously vacated by 3AK as it moved to occupy 1116 AM7. The first test broadcast was in 19985.
3KND was one of the later entrants into the temporary community broadcasting period in Melbourne as part of the lead up to the granting of four additional community licences for the City. It was granted the only AM licence available for community radio at that time. 3KND was licensed at the same time as 3JOY (Joy Melbourne - Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community), 3TLC (Triple 7 / Light FM - Christian radio), and SYN Radio (Student Youth Network)8. At the time it was founded, 3KND was Melbourne's first Indigenous radio station6.
Official broadcasting began in June 20032. Internet streaming was introduced in 2006.
Internet streaming
The internet streaming is provided in aacPlus format. Suitable client software for the Windows platform includes: Winamp Lite, foobar2000, MPlayer and Windows Media Player versions 6.4, 7.0, 7.1, 8.0, 9.0, 10.0, 11.0 (with the Orban aacPlus plugin)9. For the Mac and other GNU/Linux and BSD platforms suitable client software includes MPlayer and VLC media player. The stream is provided at two bit rates: 20 kbit/s and 48 kbit/s3.
