Anatomical planes in a human

Abduction, in functional anatomy, is a movement which draws a limb away from the median (Sagittal) plane of the body. It is thus opposed to adduction.

Muscles of abduction

Upper limb

The coming together of two bones attached by a joint laterally

• of arm at shoulder¹²
  • Supraspinatus (initiates motion)
  • Deltoid (continues motion)

• of hand at wrist³
  • Flexor carpi radialis
  • Extensor carpi radialis longus
  • Extensor carpi radialis brevis
  • Abductor pollicis longus
  • Extensor pollicis longus
  • Extensor pollicis brevis

• of finger⁴
  • Abductor digiti minimi
  • Dorsal interossei of the hand

• of thumb⁵
  • Abductor pollicis longus
  • Abductor pollicis brevis

Lower limb

• of femur at hip⁶
  • Gluteus medius
  • Gluteus minimus

  • Abductor hallucis
