Area code 470 is a telephone area code serving the state of Georgia. It covers metro Atlanta and overlays with area codes 404, 678, and 770. It was introduced on March 28, 2001 to provide additional numbers to the metropolitan Atlanta area.1

Status
As of 2008, the area code was active and assignable2 but not yet utilized,3 and the routing test number 470-666-7777 was removed from service.
Whether this lack of utilization is due to lack of need or possible confusion with 404 and 770 is unknown. Because of Atlanta's expansive local calling area with three active area codes, Atlantans often use a shorthand for area codes based on the first digit ("4" for 404, "6" for 678, and "7" for 770), which would make 470 (starting with "4" like 404, but otherwise similar to 770) difficult to incorporate.
