The Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps (ACMC) is the second highest ranking officer in the United States Marine Corps. In the event that the Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC) is absent or is unable to perform his duties, the ACMC assumes the duties and responsibilities of the CMC. The ACMC may also perform other duties that the CMC assigns to him. 1 The ACMC is appointed by the President of the United States and must be confirmed via majority vote by the Senate.1 By statute, the ACMC is appointed as a four-star general. 1

Prior to 1946, the title "Assistant Commandant" was not used, and was known as the Assistant to the Commandant. Prior to 1918, records indicate only a billet "Duty in the office of the Commandant". No records exist before the break of World War I, possibly because the Commandant likely had only administrative staff and no deputy.

As of July 3, 2008, the current ACMC is General James F. Amos.
