Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III (1949 - ), is the Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York and President of The State University of New York College at Old Westbury.

Dr. Butts is a native New Yorker. He spent a few years in the American South where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. While a student at Morehouse, Butts was initiated into the Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He returned to New York and earned a Master of Divinity Degree in Church History from Union Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate of Ministry in Church and Public Policy from Drew University.
Personal life
He is married to Patricia Butts and has three children.

He is a major proponent of liberation theology in the African American church and openly rejects the inerrancy of biblical scripture and classic interpretation in favour of more liberal interpretations.
He has gone on the record of supporting homosexuality and same-sex unions on the understanding that the "Apostle Paul was not Jesus" and therefore Christians were not bound to specific teachings by apostles, a view that is not consistent with classical Christian theology and doctrine.1
2008 Presidential campaign
Reverend Butts formally endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton for President in the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign.citation needed He is featured in a small audio clip during the starting moments of famed rappers Bone Thugs-N-Harmony song " Thuggish Ruggish Bone". In the clip Butts states,Its that thuggish thuggish bone. "We're not against rap. We're not against rappers. But we are against those thugs."citation needed
