Aldosterone (chemical structure) is measured in the CST.
Aldosterone (chemical structure) is measured in the CST.

In medicine, the captopril suppression test, also CST, is a non-invasive test used to help diagnose primary aldosteronism (Conn syndrome). It should not be confused with the captopril challenge test.

In the captopril suppression test the plasma aldosterone is measured.[1] In normal individuals aldosterone is suppressed by captopril, via the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

Relation to captopril challenge test

The CST should not be confused with the captopril challenge test,[2][1] a test used to diagnose renal artery stenosis.

The challenge test looks for a problem with the renal artery (stenosis). The suppression test looks for a problem related to the adrenal gland (over production of a mineralocorticoids).
