Native to southern Australia, the Carpet sea star, of the genus Patiriella, dwell in rock pools and are very varying as far as colors are concerned. There are four variations of it.

Patiriella calcar

The Patiriella calcar, also known as the "Cushion sea star," has eight arms, and can be any color or combination of colors.
It has well developed arms in comparison to other Sydney-region species. Its habitat is rocky intertidal shores up to 3m below sea level.

This species is viviparous (live birth)
This species is omnivorous: eating algae, detritus, mussels and other invertebrates.

Patiriella exigua

The Patiriella exigua has five arms and is the color turquoise.

Patiriella brevispina

The Patiriella brevispina has six arms and is purple with orange feet.

Patiriella gunii

The Patiriella gunii has six arms and can be any color.
