Cheryl James (born March 28, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American rap / hip-hop artist going by the name of Salt, and is a member of the rap trio Salt-N-Pepa; which includes Sandy Denton (Pepa) and Deidra "Dee Dee" Roper (DJ Spinderella).
Biography
James later became a born-again Christian and currently lives in suburban New York City on Long Islandcitation needed, with her husband Gavin Wray and their two children—son Chapelle and daughter Corin, an American gospel singer. Her married name is Cheryl Wray and she currently stars in a reality TV series focusing on reforming Salt-N-Pepa also starring Sandy Denton(Pepa).
Career
James and Denton formed the group in 1985 (Roper joined in 1986) and they released several albums including Hot, Cool & Vicious, A Salt with a Deadly Pepa, Blacks' Magic, Very Necessary and Brand New. They were the first female rap act to have gold, platinum, or multi-platinum albums. Although they have remained inactive for five years, are still the best selling female rap act in historycitation needed.
Salt-N-Pepa had disbanded in 2002 because James grew tired of the music business after a seventeen-year runcitation needed. In 2007 when Salt-N-Pepa reunited James revealed her bulimia as one of many reasons for quitting in 2002.
James co-starred in the 1993 motion picture "Who's the Man?". She appeared briefly on VH1's first annual Hip Hop Honors in November 2004 along with Denton, but they did not perform. All three members did perform on the second Hip Hop Honors on September 22, 2005. This was their first performance since 1999. On October 23, 2008 Salt-N-Pepa performed shoop, push it, and whatta man at the 2008 bet hip hop awards.
