The Datooga, known as the Mang'ati in Swahili, are a pastoralist Nilotic people of north-central Tanzania south of Ngorongoro Crater. In 2000 the Datoga population was estimated to number 87,978.[1] They are the fastest-growing group in Tanzania. There are seven Datooga peoples:

  • Bajuta
  • Gisamjanga (Kisamajeng, Gisamjang)
  • Barabayiiga (Barabaig, Barabayga, Barabaik, Barbaig)
  • Tsimajeega (Isimijeega)
  • Rootigaanga (Rotigenga, Rotigeenga)
  • Buraadiiga (Buradiga, Bureadiga)
  • Bianjiida (Biyanjiida, Utatu)

The dialects spoken by these people are often divergent enough to make comprehension difficult, though Barabayiiga and Gisamjanga are very close.

Genetic research made by Knight et al. (2003)citation needed showed that Y-chromosome lineages of 8 Datoga men consisted of 1 man belonging to Y-haplogroup E3a, 5 men belonging to other subclades of DE (i.e. E1, E2, E3b, D), and 2 men belonging to other Y-haplogroups (C, F). The female lineages of 18 Datoga women consisted primarily of mtDNA haplogroup L0a that is very common in South-East Africa.
