The crew of the Straw Hat Pirates as they appear during their introductions.

The One Piece manga and anime series features an extensive cast of characters created by Eiichirō Oda. The series takes place in the fictional world of One Piece where vast numbers of pirates try to reach the end of the Grand Line, the intersection of the world's surface, in hopes of finding the legendary treasure One Piece.

The main character of the series is Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who wishes to become King of the Pirates by obtaining the titular treasure One Piece. During the series, he recruits a number of crewmates, which include Roronoa Zoro the swordsman, Nami the navigator, Usopp the marksman, Sanji the cook, Tony Tony Chopper the doctor, Nico Robin the archaeologist, Franky the shipwright and Brook the musician. Over the course of the series they interact with several characters in the world, encountering both allies and antagonists.

Creation and conception

When drawing One Piece, Eiichiro Oda was heavily influenced by the manga Dragon Ball, and had the series in mind when designing his characters.1 Several characters have been stated to be based off of actual people, such as Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach) and Whitebeard (Edward Newgate) being based off of the actual pirate Blackbeard (Edward Teach), or Jango the hypnotist being based off of Michael Jackson, which is identifiable by his moonwalking and use of gestures that resemble dance moves that Michael Jackson is known to do. As well, Oda was an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki, who would have had an influence on his writing or art style.

Protagonists

The protagonists of the One Piece series are part of the Straw Hat Pirates, named after the captain's trademark symbol. During the course of the story, the group constantly grows. For each new protagonist that is introduced, the character's past is explored, its problems are solved, and it finally and officially joins the crew, which is marked by Oda through a chapter title paged devoted to that character. All Straw Hat members have at least one talent in which they are virtually perfect, and several (especially the captain, swordsman, shipwright and cook) have inhuman strength. Each member of the Straw Hats has a dream they want to achieve. These dreams are their reasons for joining Luffy's crew, and essentially the driving force behind their lives. Each Straw Hat's dream was inspired by tragedies in their lives that involved at least one person they idolized or cared for deeply.

Monkey D. Luffy

Main article: Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy (モンキー・D・ルフィ Monkī D. Rufi?), a 17-year-old boy,2 is the primary protagonist of the One Piece series and is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. His dream is to become the Pirate King. He is portrayed as carefree and sometimes air-headed and has a huge appetite, especially for meat. As a child, by accidentally eating a Devil Fruit his body gained the properties of rubber. Luffy is voiced by Urara Takano in the original video animation (OVA)3 and by Mayumi Tanaka in the Japanese version of the anime.4 In the English dubs, he is voiced by Erica Schroeder for 4Kids,5 by Chuck Powers for Odexcitation needed and by Colleen Clinkenbeard for Funimation.6

Roronoa Zoro

Roronoa Zoro (ロロノア・ゾロ?) is the first to join the crew. He is 19 years old27 and a skilled swordsman, who uses up to three swords at once, clutching the third in his mouth. He is extremely poor at understanding geographical directions and gets lost very easily. He also sleeps a great deal and loves to drink. His goal is to become the greatest swordsman in the world, by beating the current greatest swordsman, Mihawk, due to a promise he made to a childhood friend named Kuina.8 Zoro is voiced by Wataru Takagi in the OVA9 and by Kazuya Nakai in the Japanese version of the anime.10 In the English dubs, he is voiced by Marc Diraison for 4Kids,11 by Brian Zimmerman for Odexcitation needed and by Christopher Sabat for Funimation.12 On his journey he made a living by bounty hunting, which lead to his nickname "Pirate Hunter". One day he was imprisoned for a month, but Luffy, who had been attracted by Zoro's fame among other things, saved him, but only after he agreed to join his pirate crew. Since then, Zoro is also extremely loyal to Luffy, even begging Bartholomew Kuma, one of the Seven Warlords, to exchange Luffy's life for his. Zoro is a skilled swordsman, able to use one, two and three swords in varying attack styles, and even no swords, although he is most proficient with the fictional sword style Santōryū (literally: three sword style), clutching his third sword in his mouth. Zoro is somehow able to speak with his sword held in his mouth; Eiichiro Oda has stated that it is his heart that allows him to do so.13 Zoro has several sword techniques at his disposal, using one sword, two swords, or all three. He is also capable of fighting effectively with no swords,14 and his physical strength is enough to lift a building.15 Zoro also has the ability to cut through solid steel,16 or materials as hard as steel, which he learned when fighting Das Bones (Baroque Works Mr. 1) in Arabasta. He is also capable of using the 'Asura' technique,17 which gives Zoro three faces and six arms, thus totaling nine swords. In addition, Zoro can expand the muscle mass of his arms, an ability he often employs to break through opponent's physical defenses.18

Zoro is one of the most popular One Piece characters, ranking second in the most recent Japanese fan poll.19 Furthermore, in a 2007 poll by Oricon, Zoro was voted as the 4th most desired character to receive a spinoff.20 In a review of the series, DVD Talk claims that Zoro is a great example of the show's humorous physics, and praises his Santōryū fighting style.21

Nami

Nami (ナミ?) is the crew's 18-year-old2 navigator and the second to join.22 She has the ability to recognize and analyze even the slightest changes in the weather up to the point of sheer intuition.23 She is also an excellent pickpocket.24 Her dream is to draw a complete map of the world.25 Nami is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in the OVA26 and by Akemi Okamura in the Japanese version of the anime.27 In the English dubs, she is voiced by Kerry Williams for 4Kids,28 by Alison Lestor for Odexcitation needed and by Luci Christian for Funimation.29

She grew up as a misbehaved troublemaker on an island called Cocoyashi Island with her adopted older sister Nojiko, and her foster mother, Bellemere.25 Bellemere was a mikan farmer and a former Marine soldier.25 After a battle, Bellemere was at the edge of death until she heard a baby (Nami) carried by a wandering little girl (Nojiko).25 At that moment, Bellemere gained a new will to live, and decided to take them in as her own.25 One day, the Merman Pirates lead by Arlong invaded the island and claimed it as their territory.25 In order for the villagers to live, they had to pay for their lives.30 Every month, they would have to pay fifty thousand berri per child, while each adult would cost a hundred thousand berri.30 Bellemere, unable to pay for the whole family, paid only for her daughters and as a result, was killed in front of them.30 When Arlong found out about Nami's exceptional skills in cartography, he offered her to join his crew.31 Nami decided to join Arlong's crew after Arlong said that she could buy her village with 100 million berri.31 Nami spent eight years drawing maps for Arlong and stealing treasure from pirates in order to save the village.32 Eventually, she meets Luffy and Zoro and decides to join them, as she expects to get money out of it.33 After the Straw Hats meet Sanji, she steals the Going Merry and runs back to the village.34 They follow her to the village and remove Arlong from power by force.35 Nami then agrees to join the Straw Hat Pirates as their navigator.24

Usopp

Usopp (ウソップ Usoppu?) is the crew's 17-year-old2 marksman and the third to join. He is a chronic liar, talented inventor and has notable artistic talent, shown in his painting of the Straw Hat's Jolly Roger and crafting of detailed snow sculptures. Usopp's dream is to become a "brave warrior of the sea".36 According to a recent Japanese fan poll in the Shonen Jump magazine, Usopp is the 6th most popular character.37 In a 2007 Oricon poll, Usopp was voted the 10th most wanted character to receive a spin off amongst all respondents, and the 5th most popular amongst males.20 Usopp is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi in the Japanese version of the anime.38 In the English dubs, he is voiced by Jason Anthony Griffith for 4Kids,39 by Jamie Meldrum and Chuck Powers for Odexcitation needed and by Sonny Strait for Funimation.40

Usopp is a talented inventor, creating the Clima Tact for Nami41 and the dial-upgraded Perfect Clima Tact. Prior to Franky joining, he is the crew's acting carpenter and patches up the caravel Going Merry (ゴーイングメリー号 Gōingu Merī?, Merry Go in the English manga and 4kids Dub) whenever it's damaged. He also has notable artistic talent, shown in his painting the Straw Hat jolly roger and crafting of detailed snow sculptures. Usopp has outstanding marksmanship abilities with his slingshot and his remarkable accuracy often surprises his enemies. He utilizes extremely varied ammunition, including rotten eggs, hot sauce, pepper, shuriken and powerful explosives. Using his self-developed weapon, Kabuto, a slingshot connected to the end of a long staff, Usopp is even able to out range guns. Usopp's father left to become a pirate when Usopp was still very young. Some time after this, Usopp's mother died. After Luffy, Nami, and Zoro help him defeat Kuro's pirates, who were intent on raiding his home village, Usopp is inspired by the three, and decides to go out to sea and to follow his dream of becoming a "brave warrior of the sea". Throughout the story Usopp continues to act cowardly and remains one of the weaker fighting powers of the Straw Hats. This leads him to feeling inferior and after an argument over the fate of the Going Merry on Water 7 he leaves the Straw Hat crew. He dons a mask in order to anonymously help save Robin however and later, after many tears and an apology, rejoins the crew.

Sanji

Sanji (サンジ?) is the crew's 19-year-old7 chain-smoking chef and the fourth to join.42 He knows how it feels to starve from first hand experience.43 Therefore he will never refuse someone a meal.44 He has a strong sense of chivalry, because of which, he will never harm a woman, even if he dies.45 Sanji also seems to keep this code regardless of a woman's appearance.46 His dream is to find the All Blue, a legendary sea, containing every kind of fish in the world.47 Sanji is one of the most popular One Piece characters, as he ranked third in a recent Japanese fan poll.19 He is voiced by Hiroaki Hirata in the Japanese version of the anime.48 In the English dubs, he is voiced by David Moo for 4Kids,49 by Joe Murray and Paul Pistore for Odexcitation needed and by Eric Vale for Funimation.50

Sanji is also a very skilled fighter who uses only kicks. He said that this is because a chef's hands are his prized possession and should not be risked in battle.51 He was trained by the once infamous pirate and chef "Red Foot" Zeff, who had been to the Grand Line himself.52 His fighting style's name is taken from the alias of "Red Foot" Zeff, Sanji's mentor and developer of the style. Sanji's most powerful ability is Diable Jambe, which involves rotating at high speeds, heating his leg via friction until it glows red-hot. This powerful ability enhances his kick and literally burns his opponent when it connects. The more Sanji uses his kick, the more his legs are damaged, but the legs would heal after time. Oda states this is because Sanji's heart burns even hotter.53 A unique attack to Sanji would be his beautification attack (Parage Shot!), which he rearranges the victim's face physically with a flurry of kicks, as demonstrated against chef Wanze. With several kicks to the face, Wanze's face changed to resemble one would expect from the protagonist of a shojou manga. This skill is shown again many chapters later on Iron Mask Duval. As an expert chef, Sanji is capable of preparing almost any dish imaginable, while holding to a strong sense of the aesthetics of cooking. Sanji is also skilled in fighting with kitchen knives, as demonstrated against Cipher Pol chef Wanze.51

Tony Tony Chopper

Tony Tony Chopper (トニートニー・チョッパー Tonī Tonī Choppā?) is the crew's 15-year-old54 doctor and the fifth to join. He is a blue-nosed reindeer, who gained human properties by eating the Devil Fruit Human Human Fruit (ヒトヒトの実, Hito Hito no Mi). He is capable of conversing with humans and animals alike. He is very naïve and has a tendency to believe anything told to him. And he is incapable of hiding his feelings. His dream is to create a cure for all the world's diseases. When creating Chopper, Oda stated that he wanted a mascot who is both cute and fearless.55 An IGN review of the manga praised Chopper's character as one of the best in the series, and said he was able to be both touching and funny.56 In the most recent Japanese Fan Poll, Chopper is the fourth most popular character.37 Chopper is voiced by Ikue Ōtani in the Japanese version of the anime.57 In the English dubs, he is voiced by Lisa Ortiz for 4Kids,58 by Emlyn Morinelli for Odexcitation needed and by Brina Palencia for Funimation.59

His Devil Fruit gives him the ability to almost instantly transform in certain ways. His first and original form is that of a blue nosed reindeer. His second form's proportions are quite similar to that of a human child, but has antlers and hooves among other things. The third form gives him a werehuman-like appearance and height. It is the most human form he can assume, as it leaves him with only a reindeer-like face and bodyfur to distinguish him from real human beings. In addition to his normal transformations, Chopper developed a drug he calls Rumble Ball, which allows him four additional transformations to use over a three minutes period.60 These forms focus certain parts of his body to improve his physical abilities. If Chopper uses a second Rumble Ball within six hours, he can't control his transformations; if Chopper uses a third Rumble Ball within six hours of the first, he transforms into monstrous version of himself and loses self-control. This form is called Monster Point and is extremely powerful, but also has the adverse effect of draining Chopper's life force. When he awakens he does not remember anything done during the forms destruction.

Nico Robin

Nico Robin (ニコ・ロビン Niko Robin?) is the crew's 28 year old archaeologist and the sixth to join. She is extremely intelligent, having taught herself archeology and the extremely difficult Poneglyph language at a very young age. Her dream is to find and decipher the Rio Poneglyph, an ancient stone telling a long lost part of history, which is considered a crime against the World Government. Robin values ancient artifacts and buildings, and she will risk her life to protect them. She has vast knowledge of the world of One Piece, and usually keeps her head during surprising situations, allowing her to logically analyze them without losing her cool. Robin is voiced by Yuriko Yamaguchi in the Japanese version of the anime.61 In the English dubs, she is voiced by Veronica Taylor for 4Kids,62 by Natasha Malinsky for Odexcitation needed and by Stephanie Young for Funimation.63

Robin has the abilities of the Flower Flower Fruit ((ハナハナの実?), allowing her to create copies of any of her body parts on any solid surface that she can see, such as her own body, on the bodies of others, on objects, or even the replicated limbs themselves.64 In battle, she most often employs grappling techniques to incapacitate her foe; by replicating her limbs on their body, she eliminates the need for close range combat. The most often imployed techniques thus far are using her hands to hold the foes limbs together or in place, or in a more cruel attack, spawning multiple limbs from the opponents body and bending their spinal collumns till breakage. On Triller Bark island, she reveals that she is able to replicate her arms into a pattern resembling wings, which allow her to fly for up to five seconds. If Robin's replicated body parts are damaged in some way, the damage appears on her actual body.65

Robin was raised on the island Ohara with her Uncle's family after her mother, Nico Olvia, leaves the island to study the lost history of the world. Her abilities cause most of the other residents of the island to call her a demon, though she is welcomed by her mother's colleagues. She eventually meets Jaguar D. Saul, a giant vice admiral who defects from the marines becoming her first real friend. Soon after, her mother returns with the marines close behind her, and the island and its inhabitants are bombarded and slaughtered. Aokiji, a close friend of Saul, kills Saul for his defecting, and decides to spare Robin and monitor her closely, though she has a high bounty placed on her head because of her knowledge. She eventually works with various pirates in order to survive, including joining with Sir Crocodile as "Miss All Sunday" until he is defeated by Straw Hat Luffy. She then decides that since Luffy saved her life and she has nowhere else to go she joins the crew. After many adventures with the crew, Robin grows a strong feeling for them especially after the events of Enies Lobby.

Franky

Franky (フランキー Furankī?), originally known as Cutty Flam, is the crew shipwright and seventh to join. He is cola-powered cyborg, who wishes to build a ship capable of sailing around the world. He is a skilled carpenter, capable of building an entire bridge in a matter of moments. Together with the Galleyla shipwrights, he builds the Thousand Sunny (サウザンドサニー号 Sauzando Sanī?), a brigantine-rigged sloop-of-war, to repay the Straw Hats and take on the "spirit" of the destroyed Going Merry. The ship is built from an extremely strong wood from the "Treasure Tree Adam", the same material of Gold Roger's Ship, bought using money stolen from the Straw Hats. Franky is voiced by Kazuki Yao in the Japanese version of the anime66 and by Patrick Seitz in Funimation's English dub.67

He is the son of a pirate from the South Blue, who abandons him at the age of ten. He is taken in on Water 7 by the master shipwright, Tom, who built Gold Roger's ship. Along with his other apprentice, Iceburg, they construct a sea train and various other small warships. Tom hold the blueprints to the ancient superweapon, Pluton, which leads the World Government to charge him for building Roger's ship, and frame Cutty by using his ships to attack the city. Tom takes the blame for Cutty, and he is sentenced to be taken away to the Marine prison, Impel Down. Cutty attempts to stop the train, though it ends up hitting him. He reinforces his nearly dead body with mechanical parts to become a cyborg, and returns to Water 7 as Franky. He rounds up the lowlifes of the city to form the Franky Family, a group of ship dismantlers and delinquents. He ends up helping to fight CP9 after antagonizing the Straw Hats, and reluctantly joins the crew through the encouragement of the Franky Family.

Franky's artificial body grants him incredible strength, as well as making him practically invulnerable to most frontal attacks. He is unable to modify his back, leaving it vulnerable to attacks. His fighting style focuses on projectile attacks, including an extendable right bionic arm, cannons in his left arm, and nails and fire that can be launched from his mouth. His chest contains a compartment to hold up to three bottles of cola, which fuels him and his attacks. Franky's hair style and attitude are affected by the type of drink he uses for fuel. He can use up much of his cola to launch powerful bursts of wind from both his arms, with "Coup de Vent" taking one whole bottle.

Brook

Brook (ブルック Burukku?) is the crew's musician and eighth to join. He is a living skeleton, resurrected by means of the Revive Revie Fruit (ヨミヨミの実 Yomi Yomi no Mi?). He has a strange personality, being a combination of a gentlemanly persona and a perverted, crude sort. He speaks in a dignified, educated manner at most times, while having amazingly bad manners, often burping at dinner. He takes being a skeleton lightly, using any chance he can to joke about it. The idea of a skeleton musician was first conceived during 2000.68 Brook is voiced by Chō in the Japanese version of the anime.69

Brook is initially a fighter in the surprise-attack squadron of an unknown kingdom before joining the Rumbar Pirates, which is made up entirely of musicians. The group befriends Laboon, a whale who becomes enamored with their music and Brook's afro. They promise to return to Laboon before departing to sail the Grand Line, though the crew is slaughtered upon entering the Florian Triangle. Before succumbing to poison, they play and record one last song, and entrust the task of playing it for Laboon to Brook once his fruit revives him. Brook's spirit takes a long time to find his body due to the vast area and constant fog, leading to it decay down to his skeleton. He spends a long time alone on the ship, which cannot sail, before being captured by Gecko Moria, who steals Brook's shadow, and forces him to stay within the triangle to avoid the sun. He pledges himself to the Straw Hats after they help him retrieve his shadow. His goal becomes to return to Laboon after circling the Grand Line.

Brook carries a shikomizue, a Japanese cane sword, and is skilled in a fencing style that utilizes quick jabs. Brook is also an excellent musician, displaying the ability to play any instrument at a highly skilled level. Despite being a skeleton, he still processes food and becomes tired, though milk can recover him and heal any bone fractures. His hair has extremely strong roots, leading to his full afro still existing. He believes that the afro is necessary for Laboon to remember him, so he does anything that he can to protect it in battle, which can decrease his fighting capabilities. Brook's lightweight skeleton body gives him great speed, the ability to jump extraordinarily high, and the ability to run across water. Brook can combine his shikomizue and violin to create sound-based attacks capable of confusing the enemy and forcing them to sleep.

Antagonists

Buggy

Buggy the Clown (道化のバギー Dōke no Bagī?) is the captain of the Buggy Pirates and was a member of Gold Roger's crew. The power of a Devil Fruit allows him to separate his body parts, control them independent of each other, and levitate them with the exception of his feet. The abilities gained from this fruit also make Buggy immune to attacks from knives or swords; any such attack just separates him into his component parts. During his time in Gold Roger's crew, he had a rivalry with Shanks, and he wished to find a treasure lost in the sea. Shanks accidentally forced Buggy to eat the fruit, thus rendering his goal impossible and causing him to completely hate Shanks. Buggy is currently in Impel Down and his crew have abandoned him. He met Luffy on Luffy's attempt to save Portgas Ace, his brother. Luffy says he'll give him the endpoint to a treasure map if Buggy will help him save Portgas. He is voiced by Shigeru Chiba in Japanese media,70 David Wills in the 4Kids English dub,71 and Mike McFarland in the Funimation English dub.72

Buggy's first mate is Mohji (モージ Mōji?) the animal tamer with his large pet lion, Richie (リチー Richī?), and his second mate is Cabaji (カバジ Kabaji?), an acrobatics using swordsman. The former captain, Alvida (アルビダ Arubida?), joins Buggy after being defeated by Luffy. Though formerly obese, she gains the power of the Slip Slip Fruit, which makes her thin and allows attacks to easily slip off her. She is named after the Scandinavian female pirate Awilda.73

Kuro

Kuro (クロ, Kuro), known as "Kuro of the Thousand Plan" for his elaborate plans that virtually never failed and earned him a 16 million beli bounty on his head. Before the events in the story, he was the captain of the Black Cat Pirates, a crew of men dressed in a cat-themed way, including Django with the striped appendage on his chin that resembles the beard of an Egyptean pharaoh, where in ancient Egypt cats were worshiped, making his initial appearance as his former first mate and successor as captain, as well as the ship-guardians, the slender figured Sham and his fat partner Butchi, who both fight with cat-like claw gloves. Kuro himself uses a set of similar gloves, but with long uncurved, single edged blades for the claws. Wearing these he adopted his signature habit of moving his constantly slipping glasses back in place using the palm of his hand. After faking his own death by sacrificing one of his men and the aid of Django's hypnosis, he leaves the crew to spend three years on Usopp's home island gaining the trust of the people and in service of a wealthy family. His plan being to inherit the families wealth and a peaceful life by killing Kaya, its daughter and only remaining member, after forcing her to sign a will in his favor, and passing the murder off as the doing of his former crew. But just in time the freshly formed Straw Hat Pirates arrive to thwart his evil plan by preventing Django and his men from raiding Usopp's home village. In Japanese media he is voiced by Kōichi Hashimoto,74 Gary Mack voices him in the 4Kids English dub,75 and Kent Williams in the Funimation English dub.76

Don Krieg

Commodore Don Krieg (首領・クリーク Shuryō Don Kurīku?) is a (militarily) powerful pirate, denoted by the 17 million belli bounty on his head. Krieg is well known for underhanded tactics; when he was first starting out as a pirate, he stole a Navy ship and under the disguise of a navy flag, approached towns without suspicion. He does not care for his crew and bullies them to fear and obey him as their captain; he punishes those who fail him and those who show weakness, not even stopping for his first mate Gin, who had proven himself more loyal than any other member of his crew. He wears a gilded suit of steel armour, that is filled with hidden weapons. Krieg means "war" in German, alluding to Don Krieg's massive naval fleet and numerous personal weaponry.77 He is voiced by Fumihiko Tachiki in Japanese media,78 Marc Thompson in the 4Kids English dub,79 and Andy Mullins in the Funimation English dub.80

Arlong

Arlong (アーロン, Āron) is a feared and ruthless pirate captain, with a bounty of 20 million beli on his head. The Sawshark Fishman and his crew were members of Jimbei's pirate crew, before Jimbei joined the Seven Warlords of the Sea. He is a racist, considering humans to be inferior to Fishmen. Though there are humans he considers to be exceptions, such as the corrupt Navy captain Nezumi, and money-loving Nami. For he values money very high, so high in fact, that he prides himself with never breaking a promise, if it involves money. He is voiced by Jūrōta Kosugi in Japanese media,81 David Wills in the 4Kids English dub,71 and Chris Rager in the Funimation English dub.82

Smoker

Smoker (スモーカー, Sumōkā, Chaser in the 4Kids dub) is a Navy officer originally stationed in Roguetown as a Captain. Smoker is a cigar enthusiast, keeping plenty of cigars strapped to the left side of his jacket while smoking two lit ones in his mouth. Smoker has the powers of a Logia-type Devil Fruit, giving him the power to manipulate, create, control and transform into smoke. Because Cartoon Network will not allow smoking in their broadcast version, Smoker's cigars were edited out of the anime. This gives the appearance of smoke constantly issuing from his mouth. He is first voiced by Ginzō Matsuo in Japanese media.83 After Ginzō's death, Mahito Ōba took over.84 Scottie Ray voices him in the 4Kids English dub85 and Greg Dulcie in the Funimation English dub.86

Tashigi

Tashigi (たしぎ Tashigi?) is a Naval officer and Smoker's second in command. She is first introduced, at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, when the Straw Hat Pirates dock in Roguetown. While adept at sword fighting, she is unusually clumsy, almost stabbing herself accidentally with her own sword on one occasion. She is also very well-versed in the famous katana, knowing their names and origins. Her stated goal is to remove all Meitō, named swords with prestigious histories, from the hands of those who would use them for their own ends. After meeting Zoro she set out to sea with Smoker, chasing after him and the rest of the Straw Hat crew. She bears a striking resemblance to Kuina, Zoro's deceased childhood friend and rival, if she were older, something he is uncomfortable with. She is voiced by Junko Noda in Japanese media87 and by Priscilla Everett in the 4Kids English dub.88

Wapol

King Wapol is the former ruler of the Drum Empire, later renamed Sakura Kingdom. Eating a Devil Fruit granted him the ability to eat virtually anything and take on its properties. He brags a lot about being the king of Drum Island. His closest underlings are Chess, who is a skilled archer and Kuromarimo, who's fighting style revolves around throwing parts of his afro hair-cut. Wapol is voiced by Bin Shimada in Japanese media89 and by Matt Hoverman and Sean Schemmel in the 4Kids English dub.9091

Sir Crocodile

Sir Crocodile (サー・クロコダイル Sā Kurokodairu?) is one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea,92 and unbeknown to the World Government,93 the leader of his very own criminal organization called Baroque Works,92 under the codename "Mr. 0".94 His Devil Fruit ability allows him to manipulate sand,95 abosorb moisture with his right hand,96 and as long as he isn't wet, he can turn his body into sand.97 He has a large golden alloy hook in place of a left hand,98 that contains a potent poison.99 After his defeat, he is stripped of his Warlord status,100 and sent to the great government prison, Impel Down.101 Crocodile is voiced by Ryūzaburō Ōtomo in Japanese media,102 Michael Alston Baley in the 4Kids English dub,103 and John Swasey in the Funimation dub.104

Crocodile used Baroque Works as an undercover criminal organization built up of various agents. Their purpose is to cause a civil war within Arabasta using manipulation and to collect funds from the bounties of pirates to lead to a takeover of Arabasta and Crocodile's ultimate goal, obtaining the ancient weapon Pluton. The main agents in Baroque Works are given code names with male agents being named by number and female agents being named after weekdays or holidays. Lower officers, "Billions" and "Millions" support the higher ranking agents.

Crocodile, as Mr. 0, acts as the president, and Nico Robin, as Miss All Sunday, acts as the vice president. Das Bones (ダズ・ボーネス Dazu Bōnesu?), as Mr. 1, has the Devil Fruit ability to turn any part of his body into a steel blade. He works with Miss Doublefinger (フィンガー Misu Daburufingā?), who has the ability to create elongated spikes from her body. Mr. 2 Bon Clay works by himself. Mr. 3 has the ability to create and manipulate wax. His partner, Miss Goldenweek (ミス・ゴールデンウィーク Misu Gōruden Wīku?), has the ability to manipulate emotions using "Color Traps." Mr. 4, a man with a large four ton bat owns Lasso, a gun infused the power of a Devil Fruit, allowing it to turn into a dog. His partner, Miss Merry Christmas (ミス・メリークリスマス Misu Merī Kurisumasu?), has the ability to turn into a mole or a mole-human hybrid. Mr. 5 has the ability to cause an explosion with any part of his body, and his partner Miss Valentine (ミス・バレンタイン Misu Barentain?) has the ability to change her weight at will. Mr. 13, an otter armed with clawed gloves and his partner the vulture Miss Friday, also called the Unluckies, serve as messengers and punishers.

Blackbeard

Marshall D. Teach (マーシャル・D・ティーチ Māsharu D. Tīchi?), better known as Blackbeard (黒ひげ Kurohige?) is modeled and named after the infamous pirate Edward Teach105 and is a former member of the Whitebeard's pirates. A Devil Fruit granted Teach the ability to create and control gravity fields, represented as a flowing "darkness". He is pursued by Ace for killing a crewmate of his, from whom he stole the Devil Fruit he ate. After beating Ace, he turns him in to the World Government and is appointed the replacement for Sir Crocodile as a Seven Warlords of the Sea. Blackbeard is voiced by Akio Ohtsuka106 in all Japanese media and by Cole Brown in the Funimation English dub.107

Blackbeard's crew is made up of Jesus Burgess (ジーザス・バージェス Jīzasu Bājesu?, G. Zass Burgess in the English anime), a very strong man who wears a wrestling mask, Van Auger (ヴァン・オーガー Van Ōgā?, Van Ogre in the English anime), a sharpshooter nicknamed "The Supersonic", Doc Q (ドクQ Doku Kyū?), a sickly doctor nicknamed the "God of Death" who rides on a sickly horse named Stronger, and Lafitte (ラフィット Rafitto?, Raffit in the English anime), a pale man who constantly tap dances.

Bartholomew Kuma

Bartholomew Kuma (バーソロミュー・くま Bāsoromyū Kuma?) is one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Kuma is said to be the only Seven Warlords member truly obedient to the World Government, though he also holds the nickname, Kuma the Tyrant, having committed various atrocities. He has the Devil Fruit power to repel or reflect anything he touches with his hands. While he can repel attacks and objects, he can also form projectiles made of air and absorb abstract concepts such as pain and fatigue, leaving a person refreshed. He also has the ability to repulse (NOT teleport, as they are flying throught the air) people to an unknown destination, often after asking them where they want to travel. Kuma is the model for "Pacifista", a class of experimental cyborgs, created by the Navy scientist, Doctor Vegapunk. Their bodies are made of a substance harder than steel and he can shoot laser beams copied from Kizaru's fruit abilities.

Some Pacifistas are under the command of Admiral Kizaru. They look identical and also have the ability to shoot Kizaru's laser beams. The real Bartholomew Kuma is a human, and is the only one that carries a Bible and is able to use the Paw-pad Paw-pad fruit abilities instead of Kizaru's laser beams. After making all the Straw Hat Crew disappear, he tells him that we will not be seeing each other again and he disappears. He is voiced by Hideyuki Hori in Japanese media.108

Eneru

Eneru (エネル Eneru?) is a Logia-type Devil Fruit user with the ability to manipulate, absorb, generate and transform into electricity. Using this power, combined with his strong Mantra, the ability to predict a being's movement and to sense any being's position within a certain range, he conquered Upper Yard and Sky Island, where he lets himself be worshiped like a god. As such, he introduces himself with: "Ware ga kaminari",109 which can be translated to both, "I am lightning" or "I am god". His earlobes are overly long, reminiscent of some depictions of Buddha, reaching down to his free chest, which in turn, along with his wide pants and drums on his back, cause the character to be remarkably resembling of Raijin, a god of thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology. Eneru is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in the Japanese media,110 Wayne Grayson in the 4Kids English dub,111 and J. Michael Tatum in the Funimation English dub.112

Among Eneru's followers, the most prominent are the four priests, who like him can make use of Mantra. Satori of the Forest (森のサトリ, Mori no Satori) is the first of them to encounter the Straw Hats. He fights using cloud spheres with effects, from explosions and shooting blades to singing birds and flowers and an Impact Dial, which absorbs the force of an attack and releases it back at the attacker. "Skyrider" Shura (スカイライダー・シュラ, Sukairaidā Shura) is the second priest. He tangles his enemies in nearly-invisible, but durable string and attacks with his burning lance. He rides Fuza, a firebreathing, flying monster bird. "Sky Boss" Gedatsu (空番長ゲダツ, Kūbanchō Gedatsu, romanized as Gedatz in the English dub), is the third priest, who punishes criminals with the Ordeal of Swamp. "Gedatsu" (解脱) is the Japanese word for Moksha, which in Hindu and Buddhist tradition is the liberation of the soul. He can create dense clouds from his hands that his opponents drown in. He also has a Jet Dial attached to his arm, giving him a very fast and powerful punch, and Milky Dials in his shoes that allow him to fly. "Skybreeder" Ohm (スカイブリーダー・オーム, Sukaiburīdā Ōmu) the fourth priest is named for the sacred syllable "Aum". He constantly laments about the life of his opponents and says he'll save them by killing them. In battle, he fights with traps, he shoots barbed wire, has a shape-shifting sword, and rides on Holy (ホーリー Hōrī), his huge, pale yellow dog, that he taught to box.

There is some debate about the proper Romanization of Eneru's name, with the most common variants being "Enel" (from most Japanese merchandise), "Ener" (from the assumption that his name comes from "Energy") and the official romanization that FUNimation uses, "Eneru".

Foxy

"Foxy the Silver Fox" (銀ギツネのフォクシー Gin-gitsune no Fokushī) is the captain of his pirate crew with a 24 million beli bounty. He is a cheater and trickster. Though he acts supremely confident most of the time, he is extremely sensitive to insults or criticism, which is used as a running gag. When insulted, he'll fall to his knees, while his closest crewmates, Porche and Hamburg, if present, will cheer him up or laugh about him, respectively. Foxy ate a Devil Fruit and gained the ability to fire microscopic particles that can slow down his enemies or other objects. He is voiced by Bin Shimada in the Japanese media.89

Aokiji

Aokiji, the "Blue Pheasant" (青キジ), was known as Kuzan prior to his promotion to Admiral. One of the Vice-Admirals present at the destruction of Ohara, he is responsible for letting Nico Robin go free at that time. Aokiji is known for being lazy, as he spends a lot of his time sleeping or lying down. He possesses a logia-type Devil Fruit power which allows him to manipulate, generate, absorb and transform into ice and freeze his opponents and demonstrated some of his abilities by freezing a path between two islands. Those frozen by him are severely hurt but won't necessarily perish assuming the frozen body parts are thawed carefully. In combat, he has effortlessly taken out Luffy, Zoro and Sanji with a single attack. He is also shown riding a bicycle across water by freezing a small portion of the water at a time. He's a part of the World Government's "Ultimate Attack Force", and is one of the three strongest individuals in service of the World Government, along with Akainu (赤イヌ lit. "Red Dog"?) and Kizaru (黄ザル lit. "Yellow Monkey"?). He is voiced by Takehito Koyasu in the Japanese media113 and by Bob Carter in the Funimation English dub.114

He has a Devil Fruit ability, which allows him to turn into a huge leopard-human hybrid and a full leopard. Always around him is his pigeon Hattori (ハットリ Hattori?). Spandam is voiced by Masaya Onosaka in Japanese media115 and Kent Williams in English media.76 Rob Lucci is voiced by Tomokazu Seki in Japanese media116 and Jason Liebrecht in English media.117

During the course of the story, he eats a Devil Fruit, which grants him the ability to transform into a giraffe or a giraffe-man hybrid. Gecko Moria

Gecko Moria (ゲッコー・モリア Gekkō Moria?) is the captain of the island sized ship, Thriller Bark, and one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. A Devil Fruit he ate granted him the ability to control his shadow, allowing it to act completely independent from his body, and to manipulate and remove the shadows of others. His entire crew was annihilated in the New World. Using the talents of Doctor Hogback (ドクトル・ホグバック Dokutoru Hogubakku?), a genius medical doctor, he is able to implant shadows of others into corpses to create a crew that will do all the work for him. This allows for nearly invincible warriors that completely obey Moria. Moria is voiced by Katsuhisa Hōki in Japanese media.118

Hundreds of zombies make up the crew of Thriller Bark, the number of which grows even further, as Moria uses Luffy's shadow to revive the body of Oz (オーズ Ōzu?), an extremely large giant who conquered various countries and islands five hundred years before the series. Moria also has Perona (ペローナ?) and Absalom of the Graveyard (墓場のアブサロム Hakaba no Abusaromu?) under his command. Perona is a woman with the power of a Devil Fruit, allowing her to create various ghosts that can either explode upon command or cause severe depression in an opponent. Absalom is a man augmented by Hogback with various animal parts, whose Devil Fruit ability allows him to turn himself and anything he touches invisible.

Major Allies

Silvers Rayleigh

Silvers "Dark King" Rayleigh (シルバーズ・レイリー Shirubāzu Reirii?) is a famous coating mechanic on the Sabaody Archipelago. He is the former second in command of the Roger Pirates and is known as "The Pirate King's Right Hand". He has known Hatchan for a long time as well as Shakuyaka. Like Shanks, Silvers has displayed a monstrous "spiritual aura". It can make weak people pass out, even using it as a sort of "gun." It can be directed as a burst of spirit at one specific person or can take out all the desired people he wants in an area. An example of which would be when every one in the Auction house fainted but the weak Camie and Pappagg remained conscious. He has a huge interest in gambling, but usually loses it all so he usually sells himself off as a slave and robs the owner after wards. Rayleigh is very famous, as Sanji says that everyone has heard his name at least once in their life. To Nico Robin's fortune, Rayleigh knows of what happened during the Black Century, but doesn't tell her as she understood why. Usopp also wanted to know if the One Piece was on the last island of Raftel, but Luffy interrupted him saying that if he were to find out Luffy would quit being a pirate because the adventure would be too boring if he knew.

In the SBS of Vol. 49, a fan asked if the man that scolded Buggy and Shanks was the a captain commanding the ship under Roger or an officer like in Whitebeard's crew. Oda replied that he was the first mate and also told the anime crew to not call him captain when they adapted the scene. Though Oda revealed what position this man had in the SBS, he didn't reveal the man's name, Rayleigh, in his answer.

Hatchan

Hatchan (はっちゃん Hacchan?) is an octopus Fishman, who used to be a member of Arlong's pirate crew and Fisher Tiger's Sunny Pirates crew. He uses a six sword style to fight and like other Fishmen, he is very strong physically. After Arlong is defeated by the Straw Hats and captured by the World Government, Hatchan escapes and opens a floating takoyaki restaurant. He becomes close friends with Camie (ケイミー Keimii?), a mermaid and aspiring fashion designer under the tutelage of her pet starfish, Pappagg (パッパグ Pappagu?), and Silvers Rayleigh on the Sabaody Archipelago. He constantly rescues Camie from various large Sea Kings, as she had a tendency to be eaten by them, and slave traders who constantly attempt to abduct her due to the value of mermaids. He later reconciles with the Straw Hats, and provides them with support in finding a coating mechanic. He is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese media110,Sean Schemmel in the 4Kids English dub91, and George Manley in the Funimation dub.

Knowing him to be Sir Crocodile she becomes the organizations target. After the supposed death of her guardian Igaram, up till then only known as Mr. 8, she and her duck companion Carue join up with Luffy and his crew to help her save the country. She soon develops a strong bond with the crew and is tempted to follow them on their adventure but because of her feelings for her country and its people she felt she couldn't leave. Despite not continuing her adventures with the Straw Hat crew, she still feels to be one of the crew, a sentiment shared by the rest of the Straw Hats. She is voiced by Misa Watanabe in the Japanese media,119 Karen Neil in the 4Kids English dub,120 and Caitlin Glass in the Funimation English dub.121

Boa Hancock

Although she detests the World Government, she is one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Hancock rules Amazon Lily and is captain of the Kuja Pirates. She is as cruel as she is beautiful, but the Amazons are entirely devoted to her. It is revealed that she and her sisters were slaves under the World Nobles and were branded with the "Hoof of the Celestial Dragon," which she has hidden from her people ever since. During this time, the World Nobles amused themselves by forcing the sisters to eat Devil Fruits. Hancock consumed the Mero-Mero fruit, which gave her the ability to charm people and turn them into stone. She and her sisters still bear the brands of slavery on their backs. To conceal their shameful past from their kinswomen, the sisters concocted a story about having defeated a Gorgon, claiming that their strange abilities were the result of the Gorgon's curse, and they had cursed eyes on their backs that would turn anyone who saw them to stone. Her heart was warmed by Luffy's many acts of selflessness, and once she learned that he had dared to strike a World Noble on Sabaody Archipelago, she told Luffy of her past and offered him the use of her ship.

Hancock became ill shortly after, complicating Luffy saving his brother Ace. It is revealed that she is infected with the "virus" that was the cause of death for many of the Empresses before her. Nyon discovers the illness to be "love sickness" after she does not hesitate in accepting the call to Central to help Luffy save Ace despite her fear and loathing of the World Government. She asks Luffy to call her Hancock from then on and stows Luffy away on a marine battleship. She even faints after thinking that Luffy had said he loved her.
