In computer networking, dot-decimal notation (also known as quad-dotted notation and dotted quad notation for IPv4 addresses[1]) is a method of writing binary numbers in octet grouped base-10 (decimal) numbers separated by dots (full stops). The dots allow for convenient separation of the individual octet values.

For example, the hexadecimal number 0xFF000000 can be expressed in dotted-decimal notation as "255.0.0.0".

IPv4 addresses are almost universally presented in dot-decimal notation (see illustration).
