Fernando Romero

Fernando Romero is a Mexican Architect.

He was born in Mexico City in 1971 and graduated in 1995 at Universidad Iberoamericana. He was president of the student society in 1994. Worked with OMA, with Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam, Holland from 1997-2000. In 1999 as head project leader he designed the winning proposal for the concert hall Casa da Musica competition in Porto, Portugal (Recently inaugurated and considered one of the icons in the contemporary architecture). In 1999 started his professional practice independently with LAR(Laboratory of Architecture), an architectural firm established with the ambition to address contemporary society and generate architecture through a process of translation. Since 2006, LAR has been developing projects in Los Angeles, USA.

LAR is pursuing a new direction in the architectural practice by generating unprecedented spaces, exploring uncharted geometries, developing the use of new materials and applying current building methods. The office is continually engaged in international competitions, either by invitation or open participation.

Fernando Romero has been invited to present his work in Netherlands, Italy, Spain, England, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, Japan, China, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

LAR/Fernando Romero’s awards: On September 2009 Fernando Romero was honored by the Mexico City’s Architect College and the Mexican Society of Architects, as the first time winner of the category “Young Architecture 2009”. Global Leader of Tomorrow in 2002 in the World Economic Forum; Red Dot Award: Best of the Best for Bridging Tea House 2006; Bauhaus Award 2005 for Villa S. March 2006; Pamphlet Architecture Prize to Fernando Romero for Translations; SARA Prize Society of American Registered Architects 2005, for Ixtapa House; International Bauhaus Award 2004, Dessau, Germany; Semifinalist, 2004 Vanceva Design Award, U.S. Winners (Palmas Corporative Building); “If… Then” The Architectural League; Young Architects, New York, U.S., 2004; Winner 1st Prize FX International Interior Design Awards 2003 (Ixtapa House); Dedalo Minosse (Honorific Mention 2005) for Inbursa Headquarters; Miami Biennale 2003 e-Competition: “Possible Futures”; “Metropolis Next Generation” with Hyperborder Semifinalist.

Fernando Romero is the first Latin-American architect to have a monographic book of his work with the Spanish Publisher ACTAR , distributed in 34 countries. In 2008, TIME magazine published an article of the Jinhua Architecture Park, featuring Bridging Teahouse as one of the main projects of the new upcoming China.

LAR has been designing a wide range of multiple-use, cultural, commercial and residential projects and currently is designing projects worth 1 billion USD.

LAR is also involved in the design and research of one of the most thorough projects involving Low Cost Housing which will bring key solutions to Mexico’s economic crisis.
