Linola is the trademark name of solin, a mutant strain of flax (Linum usitatissimum) developed in the early 1990s by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Australia (CSIRO), the Australian Federal Government's research organization.
This variety was developed to provide a source of edible linseed oil with a low linolenic acid content of approximately 2%, as compared to 50% in the wild type variety. It also has a correspondingly higher content of linoleic acid, around 65% to 75%. The lower level of linolenic acid increases the oxidative stability of the oil, which makes it easily storable and edible. The seed color was also changed from the wild type dark brown seed to a light yellow seed, which consequently gives an oil of a light color easily distinguished from the dark brown of inedible linseed oil.
