Middle Park is an inner city suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Port Phillip. At the 2006 Census, Middle Park had a population of 4012.

It is located between Port Phillip Bay and Albert Park Lake, which is about half way across the western side of the Albert Park Reserve (a state park), hence the name "Middle" Park.

It is bordered by Canterbury Road to the north, Mills Street to the north-west, Fraser Street to the south-west and Beaconsfield Parade to the south.

Middle Park, along with neighbouring Albert Park contains some of the best preserved terrace house and Victorian architecture in Melbourne and is part of a strict heritage-conservation area. Many of the terraces line Canterbury Road along the former railway line which now has several more tram light rail stops since it was converted to tram use in the 1980s. Others are along the main shopping street, Armstrong Street, - See the building picture gallery in the community website external link. The fine old buildings and development restrictions in the area and new developments are generally sympathetic to the prevailing style, driving up real-estate prices dramatically, in marked contrast with neighbouring St Kilda. Armstrong Street is currently undergoing a process to reduce the amount of plastic bags that are being used by the street as a whole however this has had limited success.

Sport

The suburb is annually televised in the Australian Grand Prix. The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit, which takes place around the roads of Albert Park Lake is unusual for F1 courses as it is a street circuit, used by the public at othertimes of the year. The corporate gate is at the Middle Park light rail station (No 96 tram) and opposite Armstrong St shopping centre.

South Melbourne FC (Soccer) played at Middle Park stadium at the southern end of Albert Park Reserve from 1959 to 1994 before relocation to Bob Jane Stadium at the northern end of Albert Park Reserve. The new soccer field is on the site of the former South Melbourne Australian rules football club which relocated to Sydney as the Sydney Swans. St Kilda Australian rules football club once used the junction oval at the southern end of the reserve until the 1960s.

• Andrew Hanos (1952-2007), a former South Melbourne Councillor, who was a modern art painter, poet, documentary film maker and writer, including articles for national newspapers. He was a political activist on financial accountability, anti corruption, foreshore and environmental issues and held a senior position at a local level in the Liberal Party in the 1990's. He died of cancer on 18 Sep 07 aged 55.

Landmarks

• Gunn Island Hotel (formerly the Middle Park Hotel), is a large Victorian hotel building on the corner of Canterbury Road and Armstrong Street. Built in the 1870s, it features wrought-iron lacework. The building was modified in the 1950s: decorative urns were removed, new doors were added, and windows were bricked up. It was refurbished in 2001 and is currently also used as a backpackers' hostel upstairs.
