Nodal homolog (mouse), also known as NODAL, is a human gene.12
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the TGF beta superfamily. Studies of the mouse counterpart suggested that this gene may be essential for mesoderm formation and subsequent organization of axial structures in early embryonic development.2
Like many other members of this superfamily, it is involved in cell differentiation. Nodal plays an essential role in mesoderm formation and axis specification. Nodal null mice die shortly after gastrulation.3
