The cranium is the upper portion of the skull.

The term "cranium" is sometimes used as a synonym for "skull".[4] It is also sometimes defined as all of the skull bones, except the mandible.[5]
The term "neurocranium", "brain box", or "braincase"[5] are sometimes used to define the portion of the cranium which encloses the brain. (This may be nearly synonymous with some of the more conservative definitions of "cranium".)
