State Route 402 (also known as NY 402) was a short connector state highway in Dutchess County, New York. The route, which only intersected with one state-maintained highway, which was its eastern terminus at New York State Route 9G just outside of the Tivoli village line. Route 402 went through Tivoli, continuing past the village line to its western terminus at a ferry launch to the nearby Saugerties.
The highway was assigned before 1947 to its current routing. The highway remained intact for another 33 years until being decommissioned in 1980 in a maintenance swap. The route was then replaced by an extended Dutchess County Route 78, which terminated at NY 9G at the same intersection.

Route description
Route 402 began at a ferry landing, that connects to U.S. Route 9W in Saugerties. The highway, which went southward from the ferry landing, paralleled the Hudson River for a short distance. Soon afterwards, it turned eastward, crossing its way through a couple of hills. One of those hills is Sycamore Point, which provides a good view of the Hudson River. Just after Sycamore Point, Route 402 left the mountainous area for the village of Tivoli, which begins at an intersection with Wood Road.34
Route 402 in downtown Tivoli passed St. Sylvia's church to the north. There were then two intersections with local roads while it passes some homes. The main street became more urbanized, with buildings surrounding the highway completely. Kidd Lane was the final intersection in downtown Tivoli, where Route 402 became known as Mill Street. The route continued a short distance before terminating at an intersection with New York State Route 9G.34
History
Route 402 was assigned before 1947, however, the highway was state-maintained as early as 1936.52 The route remained intact for about 33 years, when a maintenance swap between the state of New York and Dutchess County gave the state-maintained Route 402 to the county, who replaced it with Dutchess County Route 78, which before the decommissioning, was present at the end of the highway with NY 9G.6 The Dutchess County Highway Department then extended CR 78 from NY 9G to the ferry landing.3
When Route 402 was assigned to Tivoli, it was only one of 3 routes which single purpose was to serve a ferry. The others were New York State Route 373 and New York State Route 347.2578
