School of Film & Media Studies
The School of Film & Media Studies (FMS) is a department within Ngee Ann Polytechnic that concentrates on teaching in the fields of Film Studies and Mass Communication.
The department was first established as the Department of Mass Communication in 1989, offering the Diploma in Mass Communication and Singapore's first tertiary education in the field of media. In 1993, the Diploma in Film, Sound and Video, another local first, was introduced through another separate department, the Department in Film, Sound & Video. Both departments eventually merged to form the FMS in 1996. In 2007, FMS took in its first cohort of 30 students for the Diploma in Digital Visual Effects.
The school accepts applications for all its three diplomas through the Joint Admission Exercise, Joint Polytechnic Special Admission Exercise as well as Direct Admissions Exercise. The latter two require that candidates have a strong Statement of Intent and an impressive portfolio.
The Diploma in Mass Communication in Ngee Ann Polytechnic is almost universally acknowledged in Singapore as the best among all Polytechnics offering similar courses, having groomed many outstanding media practitioners and lecturers.
Students and alumni of the Film, Sound & Video programme have also done Singapore proud, winning many international film awards, including Singapore's first Special mention Award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
Entry into the Advanced Diploma in Film Production is strictly through the school's own admissions exercise, with the requirement of a recognized university degree or polytechnic diploma in order to qualify.
To make learning realistic, the FMS runs TriMedia Publishing, an editorial consultancy, within its walls. Its students manage and produce content for industry-standard media vehicles, such as The UrbanWire, an online lifestyle and entertainment magazine, glossy lifestyle magazine hype, and npTribune, the polytechnic's newspaper.
School of InfoComm Technology
In today’s world, information and communication technology drives the way we learn, think, create, work and play. Ngee Ann's School of InfoComm Technology (ICT) is a recognised leader in providing quality IT education and training that produces professionals who play a crucial role in the drive to reshape the world as we know it.
Established in 1982, ICT has a reputation of delivering a broad-based, holistic IT education that is technology-driven, fun and yet empowered to provide design and business solutions that are highly creative. Our diplomas are internationally recognised, making it easy for our graduates to secure advanced standing at many good universities, locally and internationally.
In addition, we also offer our students the Diploma Plus Programme (e.g. Diploma Plus Certificate in Advanced Computing Mathematics) to allow them to further sharpen knowledge in a specific area and further facilitate their academic progression to the universities.
We strongly believe that education is a journey of learning and a journey of becoming an IT or Creative Professional. We believe in developing our students holistically in terms of harnessing their potentials and giving them opportunties to sharpen their soft skills, teamwork, leadership skills and professionalism.
Our commitment to excellence shows through many years of passionate and attentive teaching and guidance from a team of dedicated lecturers with relevant industry experience. Together with excellent industry relations, we have consistently delivered outstanding student performances and achievements.
Our courses are well known for being relevant, rigorous and of a high quality. We regularly review and update our curriculum to keep pace with current developments in the field. Students enjoy a total learning experience in a collegial atmosphere, with the flexibility to specialise in niche areas of IT while broadening their perspective with a selection of interdisciplinary studies.
School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology
Established in 1989, as the Department of Biotechnology, the School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology has continued to focus on the provision of useful education through active learning.
The courses are designed to not only meet the current and future demands of industry in Singapore but also the ambitions of our students to proceed to higher level studies. All courses are regularly evaluated by our advisory boards and by our external examiners. The former consists of experts from the industry and research and academic institutes in Singapore while external examiners are professional staff from top universities from the US, Australia and the UK.
Many of LSCT's graduates proceed to degree and higher degree level studies in Singapore and overseas.
In 2007, two grauates, Ron Ng and Soong Junwei made history by becoming the first Polytechnic diploma holders to enter Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS directly. Before that, diploma holders usually need to take a life science related degree first, to be eligible to enter Singapore's only medical school.
New diplomas
Three new diploma courses were introduced to Ngee Ann in 2006: Multimedia & Animation, Pharmacy, and Tourism & Resort Management. This brings the total number of diplomas offered in Ngee Ann Polytechnic to 34.
In Academic Year 2007/2008, Ngee Ann Polytechnic announced that five new full-time diploma courses will be added, bringing the tally to 39 diplomas offered across all fields. The five new diplomas are: Psychology & Community Services, Digital Visual Effects, Audio-visual Technology, Aerospace Electronics and Environmental & Water Technology.
Interdisciplinary curriculum
The Ngee Ann Learning Model takes centrestage in the curriculum of the polytechnic. Students from all faculties are required to take up Interdisciplinary Studies modules in each of the five domains: Communications, Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, Media and the Arts, Science and Technology. As such, NP graduates are well-sought after by prospective employers who want all-rounded graduates with strong knowledge in their areas of specialization.citation needed
Mobile eLearning
The use of notebook computers has become an integral part of the learning experience in NgeeAnn. It gives students the flexibility to work on assignments, surf the Internet for information, access module web-sites, participate in online discussions, and communicate with tutors and classmates through email at convenience, both on and off campus.
Blackboard is the web platform being used for Mobile eLearning.
The only courses that do not require students to have their own notebook computers are Horticulture & Landscaping Management & Health Sciences (Nursing).
Students enrolled in Film & Media Studies courses, as well as those enrolled in the Audio-Visual Technology(EE) and Multimedia & Animation(ICT) courses are required to own Apple notebook computers.
