Born in Johannesburg, Nick came to England as a baby and was educated at Cheltenham College, returning to South Africa for a short period in his early teens.

A product of the Bath Academy, Nick played for England 18 Group and his break came when a last-minute injury saw him drafted into the England U19 side for the 2005 World Championship, where he went on to finish as his country’s joint top try scorer. The following year saw him add England U21 honours as part of the 2006 Grand Slam winning squad and the Matt Hampson Challenge match at Welford Road, where he sustained an injury that prevented his participation in the World Championships that summer.

By the winter however he was back in form, earning a place in the England Sevens squad in the 2006/7 season for his pace and evasive running skills. He made his England Sevens debut in Dubai in December 2006 before making the step up to England Saxons in February 2007, when he scored a try in the England's 34-5 win over Italy A at Exeter Chiefs.

He was named man-of-the-match in England Saxons' 18-3 victory over Scotland A in the 2007 Barclays Churchill Cup after setting up England's first try and scoring the second. He was unable to play in the final after being called up to the senior squad in South Africa when he flew out ahead of the second test in Pretoria following an injury to Iain Balshaw and illness to David Strettle. Nick won his first cap as a replacement for Mike Brown, before adding a second in the Investec Challenge RWC warm-up match against France.

Omitted from the RWC 2007 squad, he made it to France for the final week after being called up as a replacement for the injured Josh Lewsey but did not feature in match squad for the final.

In June he helped England Saxons retain their Barclays Churchill Cup crown in Chicago.

Did you know?

Nick’s brother, his grandparents and his mum's sisters still live in Johannesburg and 20 of his family watched his England debut in Pretoria. ‛A few of them were supporting South Africa and wearing the green-and-gold, so I had words afterwards!“

When his Dutch-descended parents emigrated from South Africa – Nick was a babe in arms, his brother Simon was three and their sister Caroline had yet to arrive – they took the QE II from Cape Town to Rio and flew Concorde from New York to London.

He attended a three-week training camp in New Zealand in 2003 run by the former All Black captain Murray Mexted - his mentor for the camp was All Black legend Grant Fox.
