National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi was established in 1986 under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The main motive behind the idea of this Institute was to fulfill the long-felt needs of the export-oriented garment industry to train manpower in fashion design, garment manufacturing technology and apparel marketing and merchandising. NIFT is one of the leading fashion schools of India. It is the founder member of "Fashion school foundation of world", which comprises 23 fashion schools worldwide. Many of the leading designers of India are NIFT alumni. NIFT has been empowered by an act of parliament to grant its own degrees.

Outside Delhi, NIFT has centers at Mumbai, Kolkata, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore ,Raebareli and Patna. Two more centres at Shillong and Bhopal are going to be functional very soon.

Courses offered

Apparel Production

This 4-year undergraduate course and 2-year PG course is one of the best course offered in garment manufacturing in any of the fashion schools worldwide. The course was earlier called Garment Manufacturing Technology (GMT), then it was named Fashion Technology, then Apparel Manufacturing and Information Technology (AMIT), and finally arrived at its current name in 2006. The course deals with the manufacturing part of the fashion business. One of the notable points is that it also deals with the IT(Information Technology) applications in the garment industry. Earlier the course was available as a 2-year PG diploma when the name was GMT. It was started as a 4-year course in the academic session of 2003. All the centres except Raebareli, Bhopal, Patna offer this course.

Fashion Design

A faculty of trained and highly qualified staff is a plus point of NIFT. Here, the "learning by doing" approach is given importance and hence students are being trained according to the national as well as international demand of the market. This course is a 4-year degree course.

Some Star Alumni of the Fashion Design Department include: Rohit Bal, Ritu Beri, J J Vallaya, Ashish Soni, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Sabhyasachi Mukherjee, Aarti Solanki, Abhishek Gupta, Nandita Basu, Anshu Arora Sen who have gone on to launch their own labels. Some of them are prominent in other fashion industries as well, like exports, domestic design, design consultancy & buying, etc. These include Karunesh Vohra, Shaunak Sen Barot, and Nitin Gupta, to name a few.

Accessory Design

(Available in Delhi as AD and Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Gandhinagar as F&LA) The Accessory Design program of NIFT started in 1991 and was available for seven years only at NIFT Delhi. In these seven years, the program became the most successful at NIFT, and graduates from the program went on to make remarkable changes within the industry, offering 'Design for Business', a mantra of the AD program that led firms and establishments to see immense profitability through an intelligent and almost intuitive application of design.

One of the most focused design courses in the Indian design education environment, the program emphasizes on the fashion perspective in personal product design as well as on the appreciation and application of traditional Indian crafts base in a contemporary milieu. NIFT infrastructure provides a thorough working knowledge of related materials, processes and technologies in the areas of leather goods, footwear, gift wear, tableware, precious and costume jewellery, and students graduate with conceptual as well as technical strength.

It also delves into the design of personal products such as writing instruments, watches and eyewear. Graduating students move on to work and contribute significantly in the domain of fashion based accessories, products, packaging and display design.

Earlier available as a three year diploma course, the Accessory Design program is now a four year degree course.

Textile Design and Development

Knitwear Design & Technology

The course was 2-year postgraduate diploma program introduced at NIFT in 1994. Now it is a 4 year undergraduate degree program. The program is structured keeping in view the requirements of the knitwear industry.

Library

NIFTs' premises has their own well stocked libraries.

Entrance test

Written test for NIFT admissions are conducted around the first week of February at Bangalore, Bhopal, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Chennai, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Jaipur and Bhubaneshwar. The written examination consists of the following tests: General Ability Test, Creative Ability Test(CAT) and, for the Apparel Marketing course, the Managerial Ability Test.
