The Schools Portal

A school (from Greek σχολεῖον - scholeion) is an institution designed to allow and encourage students (or "pupils") to learn, under the supervision of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students often progress through a series of schools: primary school, secondary school, and possibly a university, vocational school or a college. There are also non-governmental schools, called private or independent schools. A school may be dedicated to a particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods. In homeschooling and online schools, teaching and learning take place outside of a traditional school building. The use of the term school varies by country, as do the names of the various levels of education within the country.

The Preuss School (commonly Preuss (IPA:/pɻoːyːs/), Preuss School UCSD, or Preuss Model School) is a coeducational college-preparatory charter day school established in 1999 on the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) campus in La Jolla, California, United States. The school was named in recognition of a gift from the Preuss Family Foundation and is chartered under the San Diego Unified School District.

Preuss uses an intensive college preparatory curriculum to educate low-income students between sixth and twelfth grades, hoping to improve their historical under-representation on the campuses of the University of California. Criteria for admission include that the student's primary guardian lacks a college education and that the student's family qualifies for federal free- or reduced-price lunches under the National School Lunch Act. The school, which charges no tuition, has received a seven-year accreditation from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. It has been evaluated as a California Distinguished School, has been named by The Center of Educational Reform as one of the top 53 charter schools in America, and in 2007 was listed among the top 10 American public high schools by Newsweek and US News and World Report.

Korean Minjok Leadership Academy (Korean: 민족사관고등학교, Hanja: 民族史觀高等學校), also known as KMLA or Minsago (민사고) for short, is a private high school located in the countryside of Gangwon-do, South Korea. In 2007, the Wall Street Journal listed KMLA as one of the best secondary schools in the world for gaining admission to top American universities.

Selected biography

Charles Manning Hope Clark AC (3 March 1915 – 23 May 1991), Australian historian, was the author of the best-known general history of Australia, his six-volume History of Australia, published between 1962 and 1987. He has been described as "Australia's most famous historian," but his work has been the target of much criticism, particularly from conservatives. Clark was born in Sydney in 1915. When World War II broke out in September 1939, Clark was exempted from military service on the grounds of his mild epilepsy. He supported himself while finishing his thesis by teaching history and coaching cricket teams at Blundell's School, a minor public school at Tiverton in Devonshire, England.
