The Scientology Portal

Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices created by American pulp fiction author L. Ron Hubbard in 1952 as an outgrowth of his earlier self-help system, Dianetics. Hubbard later characterized Scientology as an "applied religious philosophy" and the basis for a new religion. The body of beliefs and related techniques of Scientology not only encompasses a spiritual rehabilitation philosophy and techniques but it also covers topics such as morals, ethics, detoxification, education and management. The first Church of Scientology was founded in 1953 in Washington, DC.

Today the total body of beliefs and practices of Dianetics and Scientology are the sole property of the Church of Spiritual Technology that forms part of a network of churches and organizations that promote the use of Dianetics, Scientology and related techniques. Other organizations that promote the use of Scientology’s related techniques are the World Institute of Scientology Enterprises and the Association for Better Living and Education. Scientology and the organizations that promote it have remained highly controversial since their inception.

John Travolta at 2000 book signing
Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000 is a 2000 film adaptation of the novel of the same name by L. Ron Hubbard. The film is produced by and stars John Travolta. It was a notorious commercial and critical disaster and has been widely criticized as one of the "worst films ever made". The film depicts a greedy alien security chief, Terl (Travolta), who enslaves human prisoners to mine gold for his people. Barry Pepper plays Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, a human (or "man-animal", as the "Psychlos" named them) who decides to liberate his people by fighting the "Psychlos". The plot follows roughly the same lines as the original book, though with some major omissions and simplifications. L. Ron Hubbard gave an interview in 1983 in which he stated that Hollywood executives had expressed interest in Battlefield Earth. Though film rights were sold by the Church of Scientology's Author Services Inc. to Salem Productions of Los Angeles, California in 1983, final production and filming did not begin until 1999. Travolta originally saw himself in the role of Tyler, but by the time the movie was actually made, Travolta felt he was too old to play the role, and took the role of the main villain instead.

The Church of Scientology is the largest religious organization devoted to the practice and the promotion of the Scientology belief system. The first Scientology church was established in December 1953 in New Jersey by American author L. Ron Hubbard, his wife Mary Sue Hubbard, John Galusha and a few others early Dianeticists, although the Hubbard Association of Scientologists International (HASI) had been operating already since 1952 and Hubbard had been selling Scientology books and technology.

Katie Holmes
Katherine Noelle "Katie" Holmes (born December 18, 1978) is an American actress who first achieved fame for her role as Joey Potter on The WB television teen drama Dawson's Creek from 1998 to 2003. Holmes' part on the show, only her second professional role, made her a star. Her movie roles have ranged from art house films such as The Ice Storm to thrillers such as Abandon to blockbusters such as Batman Begins but she has said many of her films were "bombs." Holmes met actor Chris Klein in 2000, they were engaged in late 2003, and ended their relationship in 2005. In early 2005 Holmes began a highly publicized relationship with actor Tom Cruise, sixteen years her senior. In June, two months after they first met, she became engaged to Cruise. Their relationship made Holmes the subject of international media attention, much of it negative, including speculation the relationship was a publicity stunt to promote the couple's films. Many reports commented negatively about the interest of Holmes, raised Roman Catholic, in Cruise's religion, Scientology. The couple announced Holmes was pregnant in October 2005; on April 18, 2006, she gave birth to Suri Cruise. On November 18, 2006, she and Cruise were married in Italy.

Selected quote

David Miscavige
Why Scientology is a religion? Religion is about the spirit, and Scientology deals with the spirit. We are in the tradition of the much older religions -- Buddhism, Hinduism -- helping the person as a spiritual being improve himself. That is what religion is about. That is why this is a religion. It doesn't fall into any other field.
