The South East England Portal

South East England is one of the nine official regions of England. It was created in 1994 and was adopted for statistics in 1999. Its boundaries include Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West Sussex.

Its population as of the 2001 census was 8,000,550; the most populous region. The highest point is Walbury Hill in Berkshire at 297m/974 ft. In common usage the area referred to by South East may vary.

Until 1999 there was a South East Standard Statistical Region which also included the counties of Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Greater London. The former South East Civil Defence Region covered the same area as the current government office region.

Rochester is a large town in Kent, England, at the lowest bridging point of the River Medway about 30 miles (50 km) from London. With Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and a number of outlying villages it makes up the Borough of Medway.

Rochester and its neighbours, Chatham and Gillingham, form a single large urban area known as the Medway Towns with a population of about 250,000. However, Rochester has always governed land on the other side of the Medway in Strood. This was known as Strood Intra, before 1835,it was about 100 yds wide and stretched to Gun Lane.In the 1835 Municipal Corporations Act the boundaries were extended to include more of Strood and Frindsbury,and part of Chatham known as Chatham Intra. In 1974, Rochester City council was renamed and extended to include the parishes of Cuxton, Halling and Cliffe, and the Hoo Peninsula.

Newhaven lies at the mouth of the River Ouse, on the Sussex Coast, and is a car ferry port for services across the English Channel to Dieppe in Normandy.

Fatboy Slim (born Quentin Leo Cook on July 13, 1963, also known as Norman Cook) is a British big beat musician. He stopped using 'Quentin' and began calling himself 'Norman' while a schoolboy, long before he adopted any other pseudonym.

Cook grew up in Reigate, Surrey, England, and was educated at Reigate Grammar School. He started a punk fanzine as a teenager and at sixth-form college met Paul Heaton. At 18, Cook went to the Brighton Polytechnic to study a BA in English, Politics and Sociology. Although he had begun DJing some years before, it was at this time that he began to develop his skills on the thriving Brighton club scene. In 1985 he was diverted by a call from his old friend, Paul Heaton. Heaton had moved to Hull and had formed a guitar band called The Housemartins.
