The progymnosperms are a clade of woody plants including the Ginkgoales, gymnosperms, angiosperms, and many extinct forms such as Archaeopteris.1 Early progymnosperms had fern-like foliage,1 which later diversified to give today's variety. They first appear in the fossil record during the Devonian period.1
