A royal anthem is a patriotic song,citation needed much like a national anthem but specifically praising, or praying for, a monarch or royal dynasty. Such anthems are usually performed at public appearances by the monarch or during other events of royal importance. Some countries have the royal anthem be the national anthem as well; others keep them separate.
Examples
Royal anthems include:
- "God Save the Queen" the national anthem of the United Kingdom, and the royal anthem of Australia, Canada, Bahamas, Jamaica, Isle of Man, Tuvalu, etc.
- "Kungssången", "The King's Song", the Swedish royal anthem.
- "Kong Kristian", "King Christian", the Danish royal anthem.
- "Marcha Real", "Royal March", the national and royal anthem of Spain.
- "Phleng Sansoen Phra Barami", the royal anthem of Thailand.
- "Kongesangen", Norway's royal anthem. It is an adaptation of "God Save the Queen" and set to the same tune.
- "Боже, Царя храни", translated as "God Save the Tsar" or more literally as "God, Keep the Tsar", the national anthem of the Russian Empire until 1917. It is some circles of the Russian diaspora.
- "Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Ἐλευθερίαν", translated as "Hymn to Liberty" the royal anthem of Greece until 1974 and after, the nathional anthem.
- "Bože pravde", an earlier version of the Anthem of Serbia during the Kingdom, glorifying the King.
- "Ubavoj nam Crnoj Gori", an anthem of old Regal Montenegro glorifying the Prince (and later, the King).
- "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser", an anthem of the former Austria-Hungary empire.
- "E Ola Ke Aliʻi Ke Akua", one of the four anthems of the former Kingdom of Hawaii.
- "He Mele Lâhui Hawaiʻi", one of the four anthems of the former Kingdom of Hawaii.
- "Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī", one of the four anthems of the former Kingdom of Hawaii.
- "Tune of Li Zhongtang", Unofficial Anthem of Qing Dynasty in China.
- "Praise the Dragon Flag", Unofficial Anthem of Qing Dynasty in China.
- "Gong Jin'ou", Anthem of the Qing dynasty of China, praising the Qing dynasty.
