St. Helena (pronounced saint he-LEE-na) is a city in Napa County, California, United States. It is part of the Napa, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its area code 707. Its zip code is 94574. It is in the Pacific time zone. The population was 5,950 at the 2000 census.

Ellen White, co-founder of Seventh-day Adventism, had a home called "Elmshaven" near St. Helena, beginning in 1900. She died there in 1915 and the site is now a National Historic Landmark.

Geography

St. Helena is located at 38°30′10″N 122°28′11″W / 38.50278, -122.46972 (38.502858, -122.469648)4. The city has a total area of 4.74 sq mi (12.3 km2). Of that, 4.71 sq mi (12.2 km2) is land and 0.02 sq mi (0.1 km2) (0.4%) is water.2 St. Helena is also home to town football hero Patrick Harrison; Who went on to play at Cal Poly on scholarship.

Climate

The National Weather Service has a cooperative weather station in St. Helena. Winters are cool and wet, while summers have hot days and cool nights with little precipitation. Average January temperatures range from 56.8 °F (13.8 °C) to 36.4 °F (2.4 °C). Average July temperatures range from 89.8 °F (32.1 °C) to 52.7 °F (11.5 °C). There are an average of 55.7 days with highs of 90 °F (32 °C) or higher and an average of 34.7 days with lows of 32 °F (0 °C) or lower. The record high temperature was 115 °F (46 °C) on July 13, 1972, and the record low temperature was 11 °F (−12 °C) on December 11, 1932.

Average annual precipitation is 35.10 inches (892 mm). There are an average of 68 days with measurable precipitation. The wettest year was 1983 with 75.40 inches (1,915 mm) and the dryest year was 1976 with 10.41 inches (264 mm). The wettest month on record was February 1986 with 25.60 inches (650 mm). The most rainfall in 24 hours was 6.83 inches (173 mm) on January 21, 1967. Although snow rarely falls in St. Helena, there is an annual average snowfall of 0.2-inch (5.1 mm). The most snowfall in one month was 4.0 inches (100 mm), recorded in January 1974 and again in March 1976. The most snowfall in 24 hours was 4.0 inches (100 mm) on March 2, 1976.5

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,950 people, 2,380 households, and 1,482 families residing in the city. The population density was 1263/sq mi (488/km²). There were 2,707 housing units at an average density of 575/sq mi (222/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 82.35% White, 0.44% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 13.21% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.42% of the population.

There were 2,380 households out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $58,902, and the median income for a family was $68,831. Males had a median income of $43,190 versus $35,357 for females. The per capita income for the city was $31,971. About 5.7% of families and 6.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.4% of those under age 18 and 9.3% of those age 65 or over.

Politics

In the state legislature St. Helena is located in the 2nd Senate District, represented by Democrat Pat Wiggins, and in the 7th Assembly District, represented by Democrat Noreen Evans. Federally, St. Helena is located in California's 1st congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +106 and is represented by Democrat Mike Thompson.
