Stefan Klein is a physicist, author and essayist. He was born in 1965 in Munich, Germany and studied physics and philosophy at the Universities of Munich, Grenoble and Freiburg, where he completed his PhD with a thesis in Theoretical Biophysics. He was a science editor at Der Spiegel, a news magazine, (1996-1999) and a staff writer with GEO magazine (1999-2000). He now works as a book author in Berlin. His first work on evolution, Die Tagebücher der Schöpfung (2000) won critical acclaim, but it was his The Science of Happiness (Die Glücksformel, 2002) that brought him world-wide recognition. A best-seller in many countries, this work was translated into 25 languages. His later books are on the working of chance in science, philosophy and every-day life (Alles Zufall, 2004, translated into 10 languages) and on the perception of time (Zeit, 2006). In his writings, Klein frequently proceeds from concepts of practical philosophy (happiness or luck) to explore what empirical science has to say on them. He won the Georg von Holzbrinck prize for scientific journalism in 1998 and is now considered one of the most influential science writers in Europe.
