Substance is a 1988 Joy Division singles compilation released by Factory Records. It is considered by many to be a companion to New Order's Substance.

The album features Wim Crouwel's New Alphabet type. However, the word on the cover reads "Substamce" rather than the intended "Substance".

Substance reached #7 in the UK and #15 in New Zealand upon its release. It also marked Joy Division's one U.S. chart appearance, reaching #146 and the first of their two Australian chart appearances, (the other being The Best of Joy Division), reaching #53 in August 1988.

• Tracks 3 and 13 recorded in October 1978 at Cargo Studios, Rochdale.
• Tracks 4 and 14 recorded in April 1979 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport.
• Tracks 5 and 15 recorded in July/August 1979 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport and released as the 'Transmission EP' in 1979.
• Tracks 6 and 10 recorded in March 1980 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport. "She's Lost Control" was released with "Atmosphere" in 1980, while "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was released with "These Days" in 1980.
• Tracks 7 and 16 recorded in March 1980 at Britannia Row Studios, Islington and released as the 'Komakino' single in 1980 (along with the instrumental track "As You Said", released on Warsaw).
• Tracks 8 and 9 recorded in October/November 1979 at Cargo Studios, Rochdale and released as 'Licht und Blindheit' in 1980.

• Track 17 recorded in January 1980 at Pennine Sound Studios, Oldham.
• Tracks 11 to 17 (described as an appendix) are not included on the vinyl version.
