Not doing so will prevent detection from automated tools. If desired </ref> could be placed before this template, so appears in the body of the text, but is recommended against.

- Common form (with current date)

- All parameters (with current date)

Optional parameters
- url
- Provides a history of the linked page via Wayback Machine. Set only if history actually exists, as otherwise it is misleading to users and editors.
- date
- Given in month name followed by year for use by the categorization system. Use
{{subst:DATE}}which yieldsdate=December 2008. If not set it will be filled in by a bot.
