Tenri (天理市 Tenri-shi?) is a city located in Nara, Japan. Tenri is the only city in Japan to be named after a religious group, the new religious movement Tenrikyo which has its headquarters in the city and believes it to be the center of the world. Tenrikyo had recommended the name Yamabe, which is the district that the religion's headquarters were located in prior to the 1954 merger. Nevertheless Tenri was chosen instead.
The Isonokami Jingu, a Shinto shrine of religious, historical and artistic significance, stands in Tenri.
As of 2005, the city has an estimated population of 69,587 and the density of 805.68 persons per km². The total area is 86.37 km².
The city was founded on April 1, 1954. It is sister city of La Serena, Chile, since 1966.
