The 1985 was a noise rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which existed from 1996 to 2000. It had a loud, sharp, and angular sound which came through best in their energetic and raucous live performances. They released two LPs, "Nerve Eighty" on Progeria Records, and "Obscured by Pink Clouds" on Carbon Records. Their final release was a split 12-inch single performed along with the Dutch group, Solex.
The 1985 was often credited with creating a sound (along with Providence’s Arab on Radar, with whom they often toured) that used the metallic guitars and danceable rhythms of such post-punk groups as the Gang of Four and Public Image Ltd., combining them with a nervy immediacy and sexually-charged lyrics and attitude, a style which has endured ever since.
Its members have gone on to form (((microwaves))), Murder Swan, and the instrumental horror-prog group, Zombi.
