Deletion policy

Purge the cache to refresh this page

On this page, deletion of templates (except as noted below) is discussed. Templates are used to insert blocks of common material into multiple pages, often for standardization purposes.

Templates that have been listed for more than seven days are eligible for deletion when a rough consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to its deletion have been raised.

Template undeletion is not discussed on this page, but on Deletion review.

Please note that stub templates should be taken to Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion.

Deprecated and orphaned templates can be listed here.

What (and what not) to propose for deletion at Templates for Deletion (TfD)

Speedy deletion
If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion for general items or templates, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if the template is a recreation of a template already deleted by consensus here at TfD, tag it with {{db-repost}}. If you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{db-author}}.
Stub templates
List, normally with the corresponding stub category, at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion.
Policy or guideline template
If a template is part of (the functioning of) a Wikipedia policy or guideline, it cannot be listed at TfD separately. It should be discussed where the discussion for that guideline takes place.
Userboxes
List at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion, regardless of what namespace they reside in.
Template redirects
List at Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion.
Renaming a template
List at Wikipedia:Requested moves.
So what's left for TfD?
Other templates not listed above, including most templates in the template namespace. A nomination here may be appropriate whenever one or more of the following apply:
  1. The template is not helpful or noteworthy (encyclopaedic);
  2. The template is redundant to another better-designed template;
  3. The template is not used, either directly or with template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks);
  4. The template does not satisfy Neutral Point of View (NPOV) and cannot be modified to satisfy this requirement.
Templates for which none of these apply may be (and often are) deleted by consensus, nor do these criteria apply in all cases (for example, templates meant to be transcluded in user space, like other content there, need not meet NPOV).
If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.

How to use this page

To list a template for deletion, follow this three-step process: (replace TemplateName (do not include the namespace identifier "Template:") & template with the name of the template to be deleted)

I
Edit the template.

Enter the following text in the top of the template or inside the box (where applicable):

{{tfd|{{subst:PAGENAME}}}} or {{tfd-inline|{{subst:PAGENAME}}}}
This code will work as is; there is no need to replace PAGENAME with the actual page name.

Please include "nominated for deletion" or similar in the edit summary, and don't mark the edit as minor. If the page is heavily in use and/or protected, consider putting the notice on its talk page instead. Also, try to minimise page disruption by using the Preview button to check the revised template, as its new look will be visible on all pages that use it. Do not blank the template. If you are nominating multiple templates, set the parameter TemplateName to the name of the header of the deletion discussion.

If a template is meant to be substituted, wrap the {{tfd}} or {{tfd-inline}} in <noinclude> tags. For example, <noinclude>{{tfd|TemplateName}}</noinclude>.

II
Create its TfD subsection.

Click on THIS LINK to edit the section of TfD for today's entries.

Add this text to the section, at the top:

{{subst:tfd2|TemplateName|text=Your reason(s) for nominating the template. — ~~~~}}
  • Note that TemplateName should be replaced by the template's name excluding the Template: namespace.
  • Suggest what action should be taken for the template.
III
Give due notice.

Please consider adding

{{subst:tfdnotice|TemplateName}} — ~~~~

on relevant talk pages to inform editors of the deletion discussion. This is especially important if the TFD notice was put on the template's talk page.

It is generally considered civil to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template that you are nominating the template. To find the main contributors, look in the page history or talk page of the template.

Also consider adding to your watchlist any templates you nominate for TfD. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.

Discussion

Anyone can join the discussion, but please give a reason when saying what you think should be done with the template. Please explain how, in your opinion, the template does not meet the criteria above. Comments such as "I like it," while potentially true, generally do not fulfill this requirement. It also helps if you Bold your actual action (for example, Keep or Delete).

People will sometimes also recommend subst or Subst and delete and similar. This can be roughly "translated" into merge, and means the template text should be merged into the articles that use it (done by adding the subst: prefix to the template call, hence the name) before the template page is deleted.

Keep in mind that only very rarely are templates here orphaned (made to not be in use) before nomination. It is unhelpful to vote "keep until orphaned" or similar. Please instead phrase it as "delete" or "delete after orphaning".

Per the discussion in Archieve 13 they talk about eliminate all the colors; especially cyan color of concurs, and gray colors for eliminate routes. The staffs felt is unneccessairly to insert colors just for route overlapping. Actually by deleting them from tables is just going to leave all the background white. We can delete them prior to the time we clear them all out. or delete routes people just have to write it on notes section say its former SR 33.--Freewayguy Call? Fish 03:33, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

  • You guys; when you see TFD table is message because a color tempalte is nominate for TFD. You will just have to be patient, becuase it will be taken care of eventually. This will not process until at least a week. Things needs drastic changes there is not much I can do. I hope you all understand, and sorry for inconvienience.--Freewayguy Call? Fish 03:46, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

There was no consensus established to remove colors from junction tables. Each state project under WP:USRD is free to establish practices for that state's articles. There is no equivalent to WP:ELG for surface routes without exits or interchanges. The Michigan project is still using colors up until this one user started randomly removing them without consulting Michigan highway editors. This nomination is premature because the usage of color has not been universally eliminated. Imzadi1979 (talk) 04:29, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Archive 13 From this I think I misunderstood. I see some people wants to eliminate all the colors. I just go by how many people say so to take off colors. Honestly; i don't care about the colors this much. Some people start it when I just switch to ELG format, then I have to do it to all of them. I have 2 users wants to trash noaccess, from WT:ELG.--Freewayguy Call? Fish 04:47, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

ELG applies to exit lists. This template is used for junction lists. They are two different but similar lists used in highway articles. Exit lists are used for freeways which have interchanges. Junction lists are used for surface routes that have intersections. Exit lists list every exit along the freeway. Junction lists are limited to major intersections with other highways or important roads instead of every street driveway or other access point. They might look almost the same but they are not. Imzadi1979 (talk) 04:54, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Strong keep. These templates are widely in use across many hundreds of articles. There's no justifiable reason for removing the colors, since WP:ELG is for freeway exit lists. This template is for non-freeway junction lists. Two different applications need two different approaches. —Scott5114 [EXACT CHANGE ONLY] 04:55, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
  • I have no problem to keep; but you need to bring it up with User:TwinsMetsFan, since he made all those colors. It is now a little late since I went and start working. I only say we have to take out all noaccess, because its not a junction; everything else is.--Freewayguy Call? Fish 04:58, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:Dominionism

Template:Dominionism (|talk|history|links|watch|logs|delete)

This template is used as a "hatnote" on various BLPs to link to the page. As the term "dominionist" is controversial and at sometimes a person's dominionism is tangentital to their activities, this template violates WP:UNDUE and should be deleted. Sceptre (talk) 20:58, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Note: Prior deletion discussions were for very different templates. TFD1 and template of 13 August 2006. TFD2 and template of 27 October 2007 nomination. GRBerry 21:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

  • Delete as redundant. Long problematical for BLP reasons in the longer form. The short form that appears to have achieved consensus is just a call to {{seealso}}, and is thus redundant to that template in appropriate usages (such as Dominionism#Persons and organizations described as dominionist) and should just be removed in improper usages. GRBerry 21:28, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep Being controversial is not a proper justification for deletion; How much of Wikipedia is not controversial? NPOV issues are dealt with by proper sourcing per WP:NPOV, WP:V and WP:RS. Odd nature (talk) 21:55, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete for lacking substance and utility (in addition to the above reasons). It could be replaced with a "See also" link where it is helpful. --Flex (talk/contribs) 01:18, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm in favor of deletion. In its current form, the template is a hardcoded instance of seealso, and thus a speedy deletion candidate under WP:CSD#T3. The previous form had serious issues with NPOV and sourcing. The difficulty with Odd Nature's argument above is that there is no good way to provide sources for entries in templates like this was, and efforts to get sources added to this template failed in the past. A list article provides more space to deal with sourcing and (equally important for NPOV) nuance. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:11, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:Fair tone

Template:Fair tone (|talk|history|links|watch|logs|delete)

Redundant with other NPOV templates. ScienceApologist (talk) 18:53, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to edit in this comment at the beginning because I feel it's important. there seems to be a policy issue here that goes well beyond the keeping or deleting of a single template. several editors on the delete side seem to be arguing that wp:NPOV#Fairness of tone is superfluous and that the notion of a sensitive approach to real-world debates is subjective and (thus) irrelevant. I couldn't disagree more - I see this as one of the central aspects of NPOV, and its subjectivity is meaningful and useful because it requires that editors work to achieve consensus. but as I said, I think this goes well beyond the discussion of a template. I'm open to suggestions about the proper venue for this debate - ideas? --Ludwigs2 18:40, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep. this template is not redundant in the least. tone in an article is a particular source of bias, one noted directly in policy at wp:NPOV#fairness of tone. the only other template that comes close to covering this issue is template:tone, which is specifically a style cleanup template intended for unprofessional or badly written entries. in fact, since Science Apologist himself failed to point out which template(s) he feels this is redundant with, I see no merits for this request whatsoever. --Ludwigs2 19:05, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep There is an important difference between policy cleanup and style cleanup, and this is core policy's heading, so a good level of detail. FWIW, the correct section link is used in the template; the above comment has a lowercase f. JackSchmidt (talk) 19:24, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete There are numerous other templates that work better. "Fair tone" is so subjective, I'd subjectively object to it's being used anywhere. POV templates work better, and get away from the use of "tone" which depends on so many psychological analyses, it would be difficult to use it correctly. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 22:55, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete - Redundant with NPOV tag (which covers the rather arbitary "NPOV#fairness of tone"). Shot info (talk) 23:10, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
  • delete The template reads "This section appears to have an insensitive or unfair tone." - Sorry, but we don't need to be sensitive. Sensitive is generally less NPOV rather than more so. For example, regarding the deaths of notable people we say "so and so died" and don't say "so and so passed away." The notion that insensitivity is somehow POV is at best problematic. And if the template is modified to simply say ""This section appears to have an unfair tone" we then have all the problems brought up by SA, OM and Si even more so. JoshuaZ (talk) 01:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete Since tone is a minor clause of NPOV, Template:NPOV is all that's necessary. This template does not add value, but confusion. FeloniousMonk (talk) 02:59, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete as per previous. NPOV is succinct and more neutral, this one, by introducing 'fair' raises concern over the opinion of one who would use the template. Aslo redundant. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:56, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete Unnecessary. Wikipedia isn't about sensitivity, it's about NPOV, reliable sources and verifiability. Aunt Entropy (talk) 06:49, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete This template serves no purpose. If Ludwigs wants to discuss "fair tone", a concept that is inherently subjective, WP:UNDUE might be the place. 71.242.27.87 (talk) 21:44, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:Steve Martin

Template:Steve Martin (|talk|history|links|watch|logs|delete)

The precedent is to avoid actor templates since films can have multiple actors. Thus, the footer of any film article would be overloaded with such templates. • Delete Per nom and per precendent. Actors shouldn't have templates for every role (noteworthy, or not) they've done. Lugnuts (talk) 17:48, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete Per prior review and precedent. This is what filmographies are for and these sort of templates for one work category are redundant. Wildhartlivie (talk) 22:11, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep on account of his other works (albums, books, etc.) included in this template, with the strict provision that the template not be used in any of the film articles. I'm familiar with the precedent, and it only covers those templates which are just filmographies. PC78 (talk) 23:11, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Delete per above. PC78's suggestion is problematic. The template is currently transcluded onto every one of Martin's movies. Taking it off each of those while leaving the template intact is likely to be hard to achieve and maintain. Now multiply this by every single actor who has ever produced a book or record. It's a recipe for clutter and conflict. Extend the precedent. --BlueMoonlet (t/c) 01:35, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
